A letter from Stefan Gullatz to Jorge Aliaga Cacho

St Andrews University, Scotland, UK

Stefan Gullatz was my fellow academic researcher at the University of St Andrews where we were doing a PhD in Literature.

Hello Jorge,

I hope this message finds you well. Congratulations on your novel "Secreto de desamor", which I found out about on the internet!

It has been a long time since we studied as postgraduate students at St. Andrews University, and a lot of change has taken place in my life during the intervening period. I currently work as a language tutor (Latin, English, German) in my home town of Heidelberg, but I have also tried to keep up my academic publications, some of which you can find here:

These online articles are situated at the intersection of film and psychoanalytic theory, but I also managed to place some philosophical articles in print journals and in addition two book chapters in anthologies (on the writer Hermann Hesse and on the film 'The Wicker Man).

Nothing, however, that amounts to the level of success of your novel!

I thought I should let you know that while we might not have been totally on the same page in St. Andrews - as far as your political activism was concerned - since then I have become more acutely aware of the intricacies of the political process. This has been due partly to the influence of the Hegelian Marxist philosopher Slavoj Zizek, who has played a significant role in my writing since the final stage of my PhD in St. Andrews.

Also, I have a rebellious streak, and this has manifested itself in some (perhaps doomed) attempts at emancipatory struggle at my workplace over the years. In other words, I think I now have a much better understanding of 'where you are coming from!'

Best wishes,
Stefan
