'Pai Chiu is a remarkable poet among an outstanding generation of modern poets in Taiwán. This generation has produced an abundance of poetry distinguished by richness and imagination, depth of feeling, resourcefulness of technique, and a combination of traditional and modern values that l believe are unmatched in mainland China or contemporary Japan. Why is this generation of poets which came to maturity in the period after War ll, so unique gifted and productive that they must remain to some extent a mystery. l suspect, however, that the position in time, a period when the traditional culture was still relatively strong while modern influences were also at peak, has something to do with it.'

Last Nigth
By Pai Chiu
Translated by John McLellan
The one who came and departed last night, last night
With tales of the autumn wind's harshness,
That one, last night, who with
The moonbeams amid the waves
Smiled upon me,
That one
Who with footsteps
Of fallen leaves strode
Into my heart, just that one,
Last night, who with a cat-like warmth brought me happiness,
That one
Oh, the one who came and departed last night, last night's
Cloud, the one who came and departed last night.
