Mariàtegui, trade unionist, philosopher, orador and writer, is respected as one of the greatest thinkers of Latin America. An autodidact with very little formal schooling. Mariàtegui read widely from an early age, his childhood energy cannelled into inellectual growth and ideological exploration by his physical disability.

Despite his death at an early age, Mariàtegui left a distincitive imprint on both Latin American and European political thought and played a key rol in the interaction of ideas between the two continents. His legacy lies not only in his writing but also in his ideological exchanges with the great minds of the time, such as Gramsci, whose philosophies revolutionised European politics. Just as Gramsci succeded in distilling a Socialism with a uniquely Mediterranean flavour, Mariàtegui foresaw the necessity for a Latina American Socialism tasting of pisco rather than vodka.

Jorge Aliaga Cacho is devoted to bringing the hitherto translated works of Mariàtegui to the English language reader with their spirit and integrity intact. A committed Peruvian trade unionist and academic now resident in Europe and involved in both politics and education. Aliaga es perfectly qualified to translate Mariàtegui. He artfully preserves the semantic nuances crafted by the author and renders them with accuracy in transparent English. Respectfully transposing a text from the mother tongue of its creator into another language is never an easy task, but this inspired translation very clearly presents the author's ideas, complete with linguistic subtilities, to the non Latin American reader seeking to understand Mariàtegui's thought in its fullness.
